Obligations depend on factors such as the organisation&#8217;s role, the type of AI system and its risk classification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, monitoring and traceability are important parts of the framework for certain regulated systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For high-risk AI systems, Article 12 requires technical logging capabilities that support traceability, risk identification, post-market monitoring and monitoring by deployers. Article 26 also requires deployers of high-risk systems to monitor their operation according to the instructions for use and take action when relevant risks or serious incidents are identified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The practical lesson for businesses is important. Compliance cannot depend only on knowing what AI systems were approved when they were first deployed. Organisations also need appropriate visibility into how relevant systems operate after deployment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"aioseo-start-by-understanding-which-ai-systems-you-need-to-monitor\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Start by Understanding Which AI Systems You Need to Monitor<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before building dashboards or collecting logs, organisations should determine which AI systems they have and which regulatory requirements may apply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"aioseo-build-an-ai-inventory\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Build an AI Inventory<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Create a central inventory covering AI systems used throughout the organisation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For each system, record information such as its business purpose, owner, provider, model, application, affected users, data sources, connected tools and deployment environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An inventory should also cover internal systems. A SaaS company that develops an AI product may have different responsibilities from an organisation deploying a third-party system internally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"aioseo-determine-the-risk-classification\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Determine the Risk Classification<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not every AI system is high-risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The European Commission has developed guidance to help organisations assess high-risk classification, including examples across areas such as biometrics, critical infrastructure, education, employment, migration and other use cases. Monitor Model Routing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Organisations using several AI providers may route requests between different models.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Routing can improve resilience, performance and cost efficiency, but it also creates a governance question: <strong>Which model actually handled the request?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Monitoring routing decisions can help teams understand whether workloads are reaching approved models and providers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This becomes particularly important when fallback systems automatically move traffic to another provider during outages or capacity problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A fallback should not silently move sensitive workloads to a model that has not been approved for that use case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"aioseo-7-monitor-changes-in-usage-patterns\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. Monitor Changes in Usage Patterns<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Individual requests are useful, but patterns often provide greater insight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Teams should look for changes such as rapid increases in request volume, unusual activity from a particular key, unexpected model changes, abnormal token consumption or sudden increases in automated agent activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Baseline behaviour makes anomalies easier to recognise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This can support both operational reliability and governance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"aioseo-logging-requirements-under-the-eu-ai-act\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Logging Requirements Under the EU AI Act<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Logging is one of the clearest areas where monitoring connects directly with EU AI Act requirements for high-risk systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Article 12 requires high-risk AI systems to technically allow automatic recording of events over their lifetime. The logging must support an appropriate level of traceability and help identify situations that could present risks, support post-market monitoring and assist deployer monitoring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For certain high-risk biometric identification systems, Article 12 also specifies minimum logging information, including the period of use and other information related to the operation and verification of results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This means logging should be designed around the purpose and risk of the AI system rather than simply collecting as much information as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"aioseo-how-long-should-ai-logs-be-retained\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Long Should AI Logs Be Retained?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Retention requirements depend on the organisation&#8217;s role and the relevant provisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wrangleai.com\/blog\/how-to-prepare-for-the-eu-ai-act\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/wrangleai.com\/blog\/how-to-prepare-for-the-eu-ai-act\/\">Under the current consolidated EU AI Act<\/a>, deployers of high-risk AI systems must keep automatically generated logs that are under their control for a period appropriate to the intended purpose and for at least six months, unless another applicable EU or national law provides otherwise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Providers also have obligations concerning automatically generated logs under their control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Businesses should therefore create a clear retention policy based on their regulatory role, the AI system involved and other applicable requirements such as data protection law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Keeping every piece of AI data forever is not a sensible substitute for a proper retention strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"aioseo-monitoring-should-support-human-oversight\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Monitoring Should Support Human Oversight<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Monitoring becomes much more useful when the information reaches people who can act on it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Article 26 requires deployers of high-risk AI systems to assign human oversight to people with the necessary competence, training, authority and support.
